A genuine troglodyte cottage - REDUCED!
Les Rochettes is a traditional style troglodyte cottage built into the banks of a beautiful valley in the Touraine countryside. Part of the building is constructed in dressed local stone while the other half is cut from the rock itself.
Troglodyte homes have been constructed in the region for centuries on sound environmental principles: they remain cool in the summer and require very little heat in the winter. This early 20th C. example was built for the renowned French car designer Marcel Pourtout.
The ground floor is on several levels with doors from each room opening onto the front of the house. The kitchen has carved stone walls and has recently had its wiring and plumbing renewed. This connects to the main room, used as dining room and lounge, with a lovely open fireplace and stairs to the upper level. A passageway links to a further room, mostly left as the original cellar cut from the rock, but also has a separate w.c. This room has many further possibilities and could even be expanded if required!
Upstairs is a light, airy room overlooking the valley below. Here a charming bedroom with wash basin and shower has been installed.
Outside there is parking at the front and an original bread oven. Above the house is a large parcel of land, currently undeveloped but suitable for the installation of a patio and outdoor eating areas, lawns and perhaps an orchard.
The town of St. Aignan-sur-Cher, with its ancient streets and abbey overlooking the River Cher, is a short distance away. The complete range of facilities is available here, from supermarkets and restaurants to sports facilities, and the region’s most important attraction, Beauville Zoo, is within walking distance.
This cottage is full of character and would make an ideal holiday retreat but could equally be lived in permanently. It has a special, quirky personality and is waiting for someone to make it their own.
